About Kanha

Kanha National Park is a national park located in the Mandla and Balaghat districts of Madhya Pradesh, India. It was established in 1955 and covers an area of about 940 square kilometers.
The park is known for its population of Bengal tigers, dense forests, grassy meadows, and rich wildlife, including Indian leopards, sloth bears, barasingha (swamp deer), Indian wild dogs, and many species of birds. It is also home to the Kanha Museum, which showcases the park’s flora and fauna.
Kanha Tiger Reserve is also home to a number of tribal communities, who have lived in the region for centuries and have a deep knowledge of the park’s ecology and wildlife. The reserve has been successful in conserving the population of the endangered Barasingha, which was on the brink of extinction in the 1970s.
Best time to visit Kanha National Park
Like wise all other National Parks in India, core zones of Kanha National park are open for safari from Oct to June. The comfortable and cool weather during months of Oct to Feb are popular among tourists of all age groups. Visiting forest during winter months offers the best experience of sighting animals in grass lands covered with mist. Apart from animals, Kanha is best to see lots of migratory birds during winter season that makes the forest more mesmerising for bird watchers.
During summer months – Mar to June, jungle becomes dry that enhance the visibility of animals. They come out to the water holes due to scarcity of water inside forest, that attracts wildlife photographers to visit during summers. Local plants are in full bloom during March & April months and are very good to see local birds like Mahua
Monsoons are not that great for sighting animals but forest is most beautiful during this period

Kanha National Park has several safari zones that are open to visitors. The park is divided into four Core zones, and visitors can choose to explore any of these zones depending on their preferences and availability:

Kanha zone : This is the most popular safari zone in the park and covers a large part of the core area. It is known for its scenic beauty and high chances of spotting tigers and other wildlife.

Kisli zone : This zone is known for its rich flora and fauna, including the swamp deer (Barasingha), which is the state animal of Madhya Pradesh. It is also a great place for birdwatching.
Mukki zone : This zone is relatively less crowded and is known for its rugged terrain and high chances of spotting tigers and leopards.
Sarhi zone : This zone is known for its scenic beauty and is a great place for nature walks and birdwatching.
The buffer zone of Kanha National Park covers an area of about 1,009 square kilometers, and is divided into several ranges, including Khapa, Khatia, Sijhora, and Phen ranges. These ranges are further divided into beats, which are patrolled by forest guards to prevent illegal activities such as poaching, encroachment, and illegal logging.
The buffer zone of Kanha National Park is home to several tribal communities, who have lived in the region for centuries and have a deep knowledge of the park’s ecology and wildlife. The forest department works closely with these communities to promote sustainable livelihoods and to involve them in conservation efforts.
Buffer zones refer to the areas that surround the core zone or the park’s main area where wildlife is conserved. The buffer zones act as a buffer to the core zone, protecting the wildlife and their habitat from human disturbances, poaching, and encroachment.
The buffer zones offer excellent opportunities for visitors to enjoy the park’s natural beauty and observe the wildlife from a safe distance.
